50501 Event Policies

We are committed to non‑violence
50501 is a peaceful movement dedicated to positive change through nonviolent actions. We unequivocally condemn any form of violence, threats of violence, or the suggestion of using weapons in connection with our movement. There is absolutely no place for such rhetoric in our spaces.

Weapons are not permitted at any of our events
Our mission is rooted in peaceful advocacy, and we will not allow any actions that could endanger our supporters, the public, or law enforcement.

Follow all local and federal laws
In all of our public events, we have worked in accordance with local laws as they pertain to local public gatherings and protesting. We expect all our supporters to conduct themselves lawfully and responsibly, and to disavow any illegal behaviors or actions. We also expect supporters and participants to adhere to any permit guidelines (if permits are required/acquired). Organizers will share what direct actions are covered under and possible secured permits.

Respect Freedom of Expression
Remember that if someone is saying something you don’t like or agree with, they have a right to say it. We believe in the rights and freedoms for all people, even the ones we don’t agree with.Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democratic protest; differing viewpoints are inevitable and protected. By tolerating dissent respectfully, we model the inclusive society we aim to build, showing that our commitment to liberty extends to everyone, regardless of agreement.

Respect physical spaces
50501 is committed to non-violence, which includes acts of destruction. Defacing property, causing damage, trespassing on private property, and any other acts of vandalism will not be tolerated.

Illegal substances
Any and all drugs or alcoholic beverages are prohibited from our events.

Do not interfere with law enforcement
NEVER touch a police officer. Any physical contact with a police officer can result in a criminal charge of assault. Do not turn a misdemeanor into a felony. Obey lawful orders, but at the same time, be assertive in your right to demonstrate legally. Record all police interactions (as long as it is safe to do so). If questioned by the police, ALWAYS STAY SILENT AND ASK FOR A LAWYER.

Dispersal Orders
Comply with dispersal orders. Police may not break up a gathering unless there is a clear and present danger of riot, disorder, interference with traffic, or other immediate threat to public safety. If dispersal orders are given, they will come with a detailed notice, including how much time you have and a clear exit path. We must be given a reasonable opportunity to comply.

Be mindful of what you’re wearing
Dress in unidentifiable clothes, sturdy but comfortable shoes, and avoid anything that promotes violence, nudity, or graphic images. This helps keep participants safe and keeps the focus on the message.

Be respectful
Treat every participant, volunteer, and passer‑by with courtesy, even when opinions differ. A calm tone and polite language keep the atmosphere safe and welcoming, allowing the movement’s message to shine through without distraction.

Counter protesters
Ignore them, don’t engage, find someone in a vest. If you encounter opposing demonstrators, refrain from direct confrontation—walking past or stepping aside de‑escalates tension. Look for a visible volunteer wearing a vest and alert them; they are trained to handle the situation discreetly and keep the focus on our cause.

Follow direction of organizers
Organizers have mapped out routes, staging areas, and timing to maximize impact and safety. Listening to their instructions ensures the crowd moves smoothly, avoids bottlenecks, and presents a unified front to the public and authorities.

First aid and medical
Should anyone feel faint, anxious, sustain an injury, or need medication, seek out the first‑aid team—identified by red or other brightly colored vests, or stationed at the 50501 booth. They carry basic supplies and will coordinate with emergency services if a more serious response is required. We also offer face masks at the supply table. They help protect both participants and the broader community, especially in crowded settings. Grab a fresh mask from the booth whenever you need one, and replace it regularly if it becomes damp or soiled. Masks are always available at the 50501 booth.

Stay home if you are sick
Illness spreads quickly in dense gatherings, jeopardizing the health of fellow activists and the public. If you have fever, cough, sore throat, or any contagious symptoms, please postpone your participation and join the effort remotely instead.

Stay on sidewalks and don’t block anyone
Keep to designated walkways and avoid standing in the middle of thoroughfares, which can impede pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency responders. Maintaining clear paths demonstrates respect for the surrounding community and reduces the chance of accidental confrontations. Protesting rights also don’t permit you to obstruct car or pedestrian traffic. Police officers can ask you to move to the side of a street or sidewalk to let others pass or for safety reasons.

Photos & videos
Document the event for outreach, but safeguard privacy by blurring faces or taking pictures from angles that conceal identities. Capturing signage, banners, and the overall atmosphere conveys the message without exposing individuals to unwanted exposure.

Supplies table
Hydration and basic necessities are stocked at the supplies table, open to all participants at no cost. Contributions are welcome and help replenish resources, ensuring everyone stays refreshed throughout the demonstration.

Zero footprint – Littering
Leave the venue cleaner than you found it: collect any wrappers, bottles, or flyers and deposit them in the provided recycling or waste bins at the 50501 booth. A tidy environment reflects the movement’s commitment to responsible civic engagement.

Event Lineup

Upon arrival at the event, please locate the CT 50501 organizer to receive information about the event lineup, location of the staging area, and A/V information.

Keynote Speech

CT 50501 firmly believes in the exercise and defense of freedom of speech for all. With this in mind, we do ask that your messaging aligns with the values and the theme of the event, as described above. We ask that you refrain from using your speech as a campaigning or fundraising tool, and instead, focus on the message or call to action.

Above all, we will not permit or condone any acts of or calls to violence. That is our most critical priority.

Event Supplies

If you are also going to have a table or booth at the event, please bring all supplies you may need, including tables, chairs, power, tent (with stakes or weights), marketing materials, etc. We provide some lite snacks, water and our own marketing materials – we encourage you to do the same. We are serving the same community.

Parking

Clear parking information will be provided with the event details and must be adhered to. We value the reputations that we have developed with our venues.

Restrooms

Clear restroom information will be provided with the event details. In the event of no onsite restrooms, please download the free We Can’t Wait app from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. It will provide you a simple way to locate publicly accessible restrooms near your location.

Weather

In the event of mild to moderate inclement weather, we will still host events. This cause is imperative, and we will not be easily deterred by rainy weather. If conditions prove to be too difficult for your team, please let us know as soon as you can so that we can amend our itinerary. But if you’ll brave the storm, we will be there, standing beside you. In the interest of safety, if the weather is severe, events will be cancelled.

Prohibited Items

There will be absolutely no firearms, weapons, drugs or alcohol at our events. You agree to share in the responsibility of making sure that our events are safe for the public that we represent. If your group is found to be violating this policy in any way, you will be asked to leave immediately and prohibited from participating in any CT 50501 events in the future.
