Perseus Project and CT 50501 joined forces to protest ICE’s presence at airports, as reported from Channel 3
From WFSB: WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WFSB) – More than a dozen demonstrators gathered near Bradley International Airport for several hours on Saturday, protesting what they describe as Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations at airports and in communities across Connecticut.
Protesters held signs and chanted, calling for changes to immigration enforcement practices. Organizers said they want airports to be places where people can travel without fear, and called for greater protections and due process for those detained.
State Police were on scene. Demonstrators said troopers told them the property where they had gathered belongs to the Connecticut Airport Authority and asked them to leave. Organizers said they chose to stay, arguing they were protesting on public property.
Gabriel Gonatice, president of Connecticut’s chapter of the nonviolent protest organization 50501, claimed that ICE has detained 30 people from Connecticut airports in the month of July alone. “We think it’s despicable that ICE thinks they can operate inside the airport ecosystem, but we are here to shine a light on wherever they think they’re hiding — the spotlight is watching,” Gonatice said.
Protesters said their goal is to continue pushing for changes they believe will make airport travel safer.
